Where Language Leads Learning
Donde el idioma guía el aprendizaje

Quality bilingual education forms the heart of Seattle Amistad School's mission. Our students thrive in a carefully structured Spanish immersion environment where dedicated teachers implement a research-based 90:10 two-way immersion model. This approach ensures that students develop strong academic skills in both languages (Spanish and English) while becoming truly bilingual and multicultural global citizens.

Beyond core academics, our students engage in vibrant cultural programming that deepens their knowledge of Spanish-speaking countries. Through our Artist in Residence program, local Latin American artists share their expertise, teaching students authentic artistic traditions and cultural practices. Students also participate in our dynamic Capoeira program, where they learn this beautiful Brazilian martial art that combines movement, music, and cultural expression.

These enriching programs complement our comprehensive classroom curriculum, creating a holistic educational experience that celebrates diversity, builds cultural pride, and prepares students to succeed in an interconnected world while maintaining strong ties to their linguistic and cultural roots.

“Biliteracy doesn’t split learning;

it doubles access.”

Academic Approach

At Amistad, students learn every core subject—literacy, math, science, and social studies—through a dual-language model in Spanish and English. Our approach combines academic rigor with creativity, encouraging problem-solving, collaboration, and cultural expression. By alternating languages across subjects, students gain the skills and vocabulary to meet or exceed state standards in two languages while growing as confident, adaptable learners.

“Beyond books: art, music, and movement turn language into lived experience.”

Enrichment

Art, Music & Cultural Traditions – Creativity and culture are woven into daily learning, helping students express themselves and connect with community.

Outdoor Learning & Physical Education – Regular movement, play, and exploration build healthy habits, coordination, and confidence.

Health & Wellness – Using the Rights, Respect, Responsibility curriculum, students learn age-appropriate lessons on families, relationships, safety, and personal well-being, fostering self-awareness and respect for others.

“Belonging is our classroom; language is how we practice it.”

Social-Emotional Learning

At Amistad, social and emotional learning is woven into academics and daily life. Students explore identity, relationships, and community through essential questions that connect directly to their own experiences. They reflect on who they are, engage with cultural traditions, and learn empathy by understanding multiple perspectives. Learning often culminates in projects or actions that empower students to practice leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving. This intentional approach nurtures confidence, respect, and a strong sense of belonging—skills that prepare children to thrive both in school and in life.
