Floating Assistant Teacher (Leave Replacement)
Location: Seattle Amistad School
FLSA Status: Exempt
Note: Requires native or near-native Spanish (written and oral)
General Description of Duties:
The Floating Assistant Teacher will work together with all Amistad staff to provide a developmentally and academically appropriate, dual immersion program. All staff are expected to support classroom and school culture, expectations and curriculum to support and reinforce Seattle Amistad School’s emphasis on community, multiculturalism, anti-bias, and social justice.
School Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide meal preparation and support to the PreK and Toddler classes
- Cover scheduled break times for classroom teachers
- Help with preparation of classroom materials and/or activities
- Work with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
- Ensure confidentiality of privileged information.
- Maintain adherence to all school policies and procedures, including safety requirements.
- Work the days and hours assigned and fulfill all responsibilities and tasks.
- Be punctual and timely in meeting all performance requirements.
- Perform additional program duties as assigned by classroom teachers or the Head of School according to school needs.
Classroom Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide a warm, safe, and caring environment for children while staff members are absent.
- Provide for the health, welfare, and safety of the children at all times.
- Support lessons by the classroom teacher, or be ready to implement developmentally appropriate activities for a classroom while the teacher is absent.
- Implement and support the language-use plan, in both Spanish and English. Encourage children in a positive way to adhere to language-use plan.
- Interact with the children to encourage and support their involvement in activities.
- Manage children’s behavior using positive techniques appropriate for each individual child.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- High School diploma or equivalent (example GED)
- A CDA, or an AA, or a plan to pursue these credentials. Experience and/or equivalent education in another country may substitute.
- Minimum of one year working with young children in an educational/learning setting.
- Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English, both written and verbal.
- Washington State Food Handler’s Permit, HIV/AIDS training, First Aid care, Infant-Child CPR training, or ability to obtain these trainings prior to employment.
- Ability to effectively interact and relate to children in a developmentally appropriate manner, sensitivity to individual children’s differences and needs, and experience adjusting curriculum to meet those needs.
- Ability to pass background check and complete all trainings required by the Washington Department of Children, Youth and Families upon hire.

- Willingness to continually increase knowledge in the fields of Dual Immersion Instruction, Early Childhood Education, and Elementary Education.
- Knowledge of and ability to implement developmentally appropriate, multicultural, and bias-free curriculum.
- Awareness of implicit bias and how it impacts classroom culture and discipline practices.
- Experience talking to children about race and racism.
- Alignment with the values and philosophy of Seattle Amistad School.
- Experience collaborating with other teachers, community members and families to develop culturally relevant and appropriate curriculum and activities.
Additional requirements:
- Able to lift and potentially carry a child weighing 50 lbs.
- Able to lift, routinely kneel, bend, crunch, and sit for extended periods of time.
- Able to stand, walk, and sit on child-sized chairs throughout the day.
- Must be able to relate with and speak to parents in a respectful and courteous manner.
- Willing to work in a team environment; sharing ideas and being open to other’s ideas; being flexible & willing to compromise.
- Legally eligible for employment in the United States.
This is a salaried position and compensation ranges from $49,060 – $67,910 per year, depending on experience. This position is (FTE) and is based on a Year-round calendar, with paid federal holidays.
This position is M-F, with operating hours from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The work schedule consists of 8 total hours per day and will be assigned by the Program Supervisor depending on the school’s needs.
